adynkra...dawning of a new season

Our designs are based primarily on symbols from Ghana. According to some beliefs,
adinkra symbols originated from the Ivory Coast. It is said that Kofi Adinkra, one time king of Gyaman in the Ivory Coast upset the Asantehene Osei Bonsu Panyin by making a copy of the famous Golden Stool.
The Asantes declared war on the Gyamans and defeated them. Adinkra was beheaded and
some of the Gyamans taken captive. Among them were craftsmen skilled in pattern cutting and fabric stamping. These patterns were adapted by the Asantes and developed into what is now commonly known as adinkra symbols - named after Kofi Adinkra, king of Gyaman.
Others believe that these symbols were developed by Asante craftsmen as a form of
communication and that the name was originally “odi nkra” meaning “one with a message” or messenger. These messages were usually messages to the dead and therefore adinkra cloth was originally worn at funerals.
Today the symbols and cloths are worn at all kinds of occasions and several others have been added to the collection.

adÿnkra combines the simplicity of “adinkra” symbolism with some unique ideas and the rich vibrancy of African colour and cultural language resulting in designs which appeal to all regardless of age, gender, ethnicity or creed.

adÿnkra, based in London, UK, creates and markets a unique range of greeting cards, wrapping papers for all occasions, jewellery for both men and women and dress and furnishing fabrics. adÿnkra products are available at wholesale prices to retailers.
